When I sell silver coins, should I get more money for proof sets than just melt value? Silver dropped $1 today?

I have;

4 uncirculated pre-1964 Quarters ( 1959-P , 1961-D , 1962-D , 1964-D )

1 circulated 1951 No Mint Mark? Where is it from?

1 circulated Mercury Dime (Cant find a mint mark, I thought mint mark was on the obverse)

1 1964 Unopened Silver Proof Mint Set that has never been open (Still in the original envelope from the United States Treasury Department from Philadelphia. Still sealed in original envelope

1 1963 Silver Proof Coin Set - The envelope from the treasury department has been opened, but all coins are still in the plastic seal and has Certificate from the Philadelphia Mint.

I know that what I have isn't a lot, But the dealer wants to give me melt value for everything. I thought at the very least I should get alittle more money for the proof sets. Especially the 1964 because it has never been opened from it's envelope. I thought that would increase the value. I know the chances are rare but there could be a cameo, or some kind of error in that set making it more valuable.

I'm new at this, but I love it. I love looking through coins. Silver dropped $1 today, is it time to sell?
I'm young and I think I found a new hobby, I enjoy it so much.

Like I said above, should I sell everything for only melt value? That doesn't seem right to me

any suggestions or advice for this novice collector would be greatly appreciated. I really enjoy all this and the more I know the better.

Sorry, but one more question...Does anyone know any good books to read about coins and collecting?

answers:

The 4 uncirculated quarters are worth a little more than melt if they are truly uncirculated. The mint mark on the winged liberty (mercury) dime is on the reverse below the E in ONE. The proof sets are selling for around $15.95 each. Being sealed does not increase the value of proof sets most of the time. Silver dropping $1 is not uncommon and is not much. The so-called experts expect silver and gold to go up even more next year. If you don't need the money hold onto your coins. Right now proof sets are down in value and that too may turn around when the economy starts to get better. As for books get a Red Book A Guide Book of US Coins. The book has important info such as where mint marks are, a guide to grading each series, lots of history and of course a retail price guide that is to be taken as a guide only. Monthly price guides are more up to date on values. Most series of coins have books on them. In the end books can cost more than coins. I have collected for a log time and have a lot of interests so have shelves of books on coins, medals and tokens of the US and the world. I allow email through Yahoo answers and would be glad to help you if you like. I always recommend going to more than one coin dealer when selling or even buying. Hope this helps

answers:

You can do an online search. Just google the type of coin and what year it is. They each have different values. You can also ask a dealer. I would go with the historic value. It is probably worth more. Then again, it does depend on each coin, the year, and the condition.

What is the value of a silver quarter from 1950?

I found a pure silver (or at least, I think it's mostly silver?) quarter dated to 1950. Someone told me that they stopped making quarters like that around 1965, so I figured my quarter may be worth something to collectors.
Anyone know what that approximate value may be, and how I would go about selling it to someone (besides eBay)?

answers:

If in low grades dealers will pay 7 to 8 times face for the silver in it. In mint state 63 it only trends for $9 and trends prices usually are a little on the high side, of what is considered an average retail. Of course a dealer would pay 40 to 50 percent less if the coin graded that high. It is better to hold onto it, for silver is going up and more collectors are collecting quarters thanks to the state quarters.

answers:

It does. You would think that nobody would care, because bullion is bullion. But the fact is that bullion coins like the Eagles and Maple Leafs sell for a slight to large premium over spot market prices, depending on the year. For example, the 1996 Eagles saw the lowest production of any year in the series, just 3.6 million bullion coins (non-proof), compared to over 30 million in 2009 and 20 million in 2008. Cleaning a 1996 turns it into a coin that a collector won't want, and a bullion investor will pay no premium at all for, in fact, offer below spot for.

answers:

It is not very common that one has 25 Morgan dollars all the same date. The only 1886 dated dollar to have a good premium is the 1886-S, the mint mark if any is on the eagle side near the bottom under the wreath. It is valued at $37 in the low grade of very good to $70 in the higher circulated grade of extra fine. In mint state (no wear) at the low end value is $235 up to $575 in the higher mint state grades. The other 1886 dollars are values $14.50 to $37 in grades listed above.

Try Tiiqueilbles of Irvington 5603 E Washington St. 317-354-9299 and talk to Rick, he's an old friend of mine.
Also try calling the Midland Antiques at 907 E MIchigan, 317-267-9005

Other than that get the old yellowpages out and go to the "antiques dealers" section and start calling antique dealers and asking them if they are interested in what you have. If you get near an antique store you could stop in and pick up a booklet for free that list most of the antique store in Indianapolis and surrounding areas, it's a handy little guide to have.

Ty' - 4y = (t^6)(e^t)

y' - (4/t)y = (t^5)(e^t)

[e^(4ln t )]y' - [e^(4ln t )](4/t)y = [e^(4ln t )](t^5)(e^t)

Edit: Damned! I solved this problem completely incorrectly due to my ignorance of a negative sign. Here is the correct solution:

ty' - 4y = (t^6)(e^t)

y' + (-4/t)y = (t^5)(e^t)

[e^(-4ln t )]y' + [e^(-4ln t )](-4/t)y = [e^(-4ln t )](t^5)(e^t)

Note that [e^(-4ln t )] = 1/t^4.

(1/t^4)y' + (-4/t^5)y = (t)(e^t)

P/E tells the profit to earnings ratio. Some investors look heavily on P/E ratio. Europeans and Americans have different thoughts. Generally if a US stock has a P/E ratio of 15 or under, the company is stable and priced right In a good market, Europeans buy with P/E ratios 30 and above. The higher the number, the more over priced the stock is for its revenues.

For what values of a and b does the function f(x)= ax e^{bx^2} have the maximum value f(4)=5?

I believe that the maximum value f(4)=5 is very important... I took the derivative a set it equal to zero but I dont think I had to do that. I was just trying to play around with it.

answers:

As mentioned, you were right to take the derivative and set it equal to zero. Then you should get a value of x that depends on b (actually here you'll get an x^2 term, just solve for that). Since we want the maximum to be at x=4, this x value (that depends on b) should be equal to 4 (and so x^2=16). Then we can solve for b.

Once you have b, go back to the original function and set f(4)=5 to solve for a.

You should end up with b = -1/32 and a = 5/4*e^(1/2). I didn't want to actually work this out here because I think you'll get a lot out of doing the problem. Please post additional details or email me if you need more help.

Also, it would probably be a good idea to confirm to yourself that x=4 yields a maximum. All we did to find the b value was to make x=4 a critical point, which could be a max, min, or really neither. It works out here, but it's always good to check.

answers:

Probably Ebay...but you may want to consider calling a doll auction house first (theriaults; withingtons; sotheby; Julia's; etc....) They can give you estimates and if they are high price dolls-you may want to just go through the aution house (safer/more money). If they are true antiques -dont use a random auction house (in the area)....make sure its in a DOLL auction. There will be more specialized population of buyers and your doll will bring a better price. If you post pictures of them on Ebay's doll forum-some of the ladies there will help you ID them too.
Good luck

Pi is the ratio of circumfrence to radius. It is a constant value. Its exact value is not known to me. It is approximated as 3.14. Actually it is an infinite decimal number. On considering it as 22/7, it will be 3.142857142857 ie a continuous recurring number.

answers:

Pi is what it is... The ratio of circumference to DIAMETER. It can't be defined though conventional base-10 mathematics as an exact number or fraction.... Though for PRACTICAL uses, 355/113 is better approximation.

I think the old adage about the ring is apt here: "A ring is a circle. It has no beginning and no end."
Consider some of the other mathematical anomalies that occur when we try to "define" something that is so "easy" to perceive.... Such as thirds. We can easily break something into 3 equal parts, and recognize that the 3 parts together make up the whole... But when we compare the parts to the whole mathematically, we end up with infinite decimals.

To use a great quote from the movie "Pi": You see the simplicity of the circle. You see the maddening complexity of the endless string of numbers, 3.14 off into infinity.

The origins of the fraction 22/7 are: In the third century BC, Archimedes proved the sharp inequalities 223/71 < ? < 22/7, by means of regular 96-gons; these values are 0.02% and 0.04% off, respectively. The Chinese mathematician and astronomer Zu Chongzhi in the 5th century computed ? Between 3.1415926 and 3.1415927, which was correct to 7 decimal places. He gave two other approximations of pi, 22/7 and 355/113.

Call a reputable jeweler in your area. I have dealt in this for years. A jeweler will less likely be interested in your stash and will give a fair market value. Then when you have a good idea of what it is worth, if interested in selling, go on eBay auction at above asking price of course. You would be surprised at what collectors will pay to have a great piece added to their collection.
I sold many great pieces at a great deal and could have made a lot more if I were the greedy type. But just trying to make people happy. It is just things after all.

Also I do know that cameos if turned backwards and held to the light, you will be able to see the silhouette. If you cannot see the silhouette it is probably not a valuable piece. Sold a lot of these

We need the date, mint mark and condition of the coin to give you an estimate. Better yet take it to a couple of coin dealers and get a buying price from each of them.
Most coins dealers I have seen will buy or sell at the same price (current London fix). They make their money off fees. If you buy for 1000 and pay a $25 per oz fee, then you walk around the block, you could probably sell it back for $1000, but would have to pay another $25 per oz fee, so it would cost you $50 per oz for the round trip. This is why it's hard for individuals to make money trading physical gold. It has to go up that much just to cover your costs. Some dealers charge more than $25. That's for standard bullion coins. Unusual bars could be a lot more.

The first one that comes to mind is the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, http://www.getty.edu/ .

The Huntington Library is another, http://www.huntington.org/ . And, of course, the Chicago Art Institute, http://www.artic.edu/aic/ .

I'm sure there are many, many more - both museums and libraries. What was the general location or city you were looking for (i.e., Paris, London, Los Angeles)?
